These religious complexes date back to the period between the 15th and 19th centuries and are enriched by the works of renowned masters who transport visitors on a journey through time, full of culture and emotion. Let’s take a look at how this tradition began and conclude with a recommendation for a Sacro Monte that you might not expect to visit in 2026.

Origin of the Sacri Monti tradition

The Sacri Monti are a sort of architectural jewel located on hilltops, where sacred history comes to life through frescoes and sculptures narrating the deeds of Christ, the life of Mary and the saints, or the mysteries of the Rosary. At the end of the 15th century, in Tuscany and Lombardy almost simultaneously, the Franciscans had the habit of creating reproductions of Jerusalem. When we talk about Sacro Monte, therefore, we are referring to this form of devotion and architectural conception that Franco Cardini defines as “an authentic glory of Franciscan observance”. The conception of the “Sacri Monti” or “Jerusalems” is the result of “an original concept, in which topomimesis, symbolic evocation-imitation, the liturgy of ‘sacred representations”, Renaissance scenographic art and utopian-urbanistic experimentation converge and meet’.

Why is it called Sacro Monte?

The Sacri Monti are small sanctuary towns consisting of chapels which, at least originally, symbolically reproduced the structure and location of the various holy places that pilgrims to Jerusalem used to visit on their “cerche”, pilgrimages to obtain indulgences. Franco Cardini speaks of great “scenic machines” created as places where “those who could not make the longed-for pilgrimage for reasons of age, health or economic condition could, in any case, access the spiritual and emotional experience of the Holy Journey in some way and gain some indulgences”. A sort of proximity tourism of antiquity, when travelling abroad was truly impossible. For this reason, during the Counter-Reformation, the Sacred Mountains became powerful means of communication, capable of engaging the faithful in the story of sacred history and organising their devotion. Since then, these places have been centres of veneration, but also artistic masterpieces that bear witness to the religious fervour and mastery of their creators.

Not just Varallo: the Sacred Mount of San Vivaldo

Over the centuries, a wider audience became aware of the ‘Sacred Mountains’ and began to study and restore them in a more systematic way, in order to enhance their extraordinary symbolism. There are several places of worship known as Sacred Mountains in Italy that can be visited. The most famous is undoubtedly the Sacred Mountain of Varallo, commissioned by the Franciscan Friar Bernardino Caimi at the end of the 15th century. But if you love art and spirituality, you cannot stop there. As Franco Cardini says in the collection La Gerusalemme di San Vivaldo (The Jerusalem of San Vivaldo) edited by Pierantonio Piatti and Francesco Salvestrini: ‘The earliest and most important example of this new form of sacred art, worship and devotional tradition is the Minorite convent of San Vivaldo near Montaione in central Tuscany, not far from San Gimignano’.
